Javier López analyzes the challenges of cargo transport insurance in Pymeseguros

Javier López, Director of Offer and Distribution at Assek Europe, was one of the experts invited to participate in the special report on cargo transport insurance published by Pymeseguros magazine in its May issue. This collective report also featured industry leaders such as Antonio Mengod (RibéSalat) and Jorge Pons (Quality Brokers), offering a complete overview of current challenges and trends.

López offered an expert perspective on current challenges, highlighting that "something is being done well," referring to the improvement in claims frequency following the pandemic.

One of the points of greatest concern is theft, a risk that accounts for nearly 25% of annual claims. "Theft, evidently, in the transport of goods is a risk that worries all of us, because it represents practically a quarter of the claim amount every year, and it is also increasing," he emphasized.

In this regard, he advocated for contractual clarity: "We have a very strict clause, adapted to the client's reality, so that when a claim occurs, the client knows perfectly whether it is insured, because the wording of the clause avoids ambiguity."

Regarding new logistics scenarios, such as the rise of e-commerce, he was forceful: "Obviously, companies cannot turn their backs on a reality that has not only come to stay but is getting stronger every year and carries more weight in the distribution chain." This trend, he affirmed, "forces us to incorporate additional guarantees, more specific coverages, and limit extensions to achieve all that agility."

Regarding the impact of tariffs and new markets, the expert warned: "It will lead to the opening of new markets, which generate unknown risks," and recalled that transport insurance is property damage insurance: "No cargo transport policy can insure the simple risk of rejection. There are other types of insurance for that."

At Assek Europe, we are proud to actively contribute to the industry debate, reinforcing our commitment to agile, clear, and specialized transport insurance. Our thanks go to Pymeseguros and its director, Carmen Peña, for giving us the opportunity to contribute our vision to this comprehensive analysis of the present and future of cargo insurance.
